Through Creativity, Integrity & Patience

Behavior Modification

Many clients bring dogs to Fieldstone K9 Academy who have developed unwanted habits simply because the owner did not understand how to offer proper leadership skills that the dog needs to adjust to the human world.

If the dog does not have the guidance it needs from their human, it will take over in a way that is undesirable such as leash reactivity with humans or other animals, counter surfing, getting into the garbage, jumping, fear at veterinary appointments, lunging at the door when strangers arrive, persistent barking etc. And the list goes on.

We will diagnose your dog’s issues and recommend what program will work best for you and your dog. Book a consultation for dog training classes by clicking here to fill out our form or call 440.264.3969.

I can’t stay enough positive things about Fieldstone K9 Academy. Cost is very fair and in comparison to all the other trainers/programs we have tried I am getting way more bang for my buck here. I just wish we would have found Stacey sooner. I 10/10 reccomend this place to anyone who wants actual training for their dog and to learn how to lead their dog into a happier more obedient life. –Sandy Bartram, Google review

Train your dog with techniques that work for their specific temperament.

Kimber walking backwards on command increases hind end awareness. This is an advanced obedience maneuver to further the degree of difficulty we can start walking backwards up stairs, to further increase the difficulty of this maneuver to an environment we’ve never been to at an outdoor shopping center with many people and traffic- trucks and cars. The key to great obedience is total engagement. This means he’s totally engaged in what I’m asking him to do. You can tell he’s totally engaged because he never takes his eyes off me. I’m using positive reinforcement with a food reward.

On a trip to Petsmart, Kimber gets to pick out one thing he enjoys chewing on. This trip, on his own, the biggest rawhide bone available to the store. He took it to the counter to be checked out, and then carried the rawhide through the parking lot. When we got to the car you can see him contemplating how to get through the door with the rawhide. He worked it out!

Kimber and Stacey doing basic obedience maneuvers which is heel, stop, sit with implied stay. Stacey walks further away while he is sitting with the implied stay and then gives the heel command and he rejoins her for heel at side. He does all of this with the distractions of people and high traffic around him. It is very important to increase levels of distraction while training. We do this by asking for obedience commands in many different environments.

Kimber walking backwards up a flight of stairs with no pressure from my body language. He’s going all the way up on his own because he knows when he reaches the top he will be rewarded with his ball, again total positive reinforcement with a ball reward; his favorite toy.  He barks with excitement at getting the reward.

Belgian Malinois was taught behaviors to channel his inner “Michael Scott”! Hold Pencil exercise took several repetitions to master the hold command while not biting down hard on the pencil. Given his natural instincts to bite hard this took much control and positive reinforcement for him to understand to “hold the pencil gently.”

Retrieve Blue Bone- Because Mals are so intelligent, it was easy for him to discern colors as shown. He recognizes the difference between the colors orange and blue. The bones are the shape and size are exactly alike. Both colors of bones where available for him to choose. Retrieving the blue bone shows his high degree of intelligence. His drive to please his owner is off the charts and that makes him highly trainable. Not all dogs have this high drive to please their people. Figuring out what motivates your dog and makes the exercise fun is the key to communicating well with them to master a behavior.

Water Bottle- first I taught him to identify the object with the word. Then I applied the “bring to me command.” Next, I shorted it in a conversation style and he could identify that it was same command. Not all dogs can do this! He is super smart.

When I train dogs, I break it down to the simplest behavior and work my way up to a more complected behavior using a balanced approach. I used completely positive techniques in this video. Tons of praise and rewards for the correct behavior. The timing of praise and reward is extremely important.
