Belgian Malinois was taught behaviors to channel his inner “Michael Scott”! Hold Pencil exercise took several repetitions to master the hold command while not biting down hard on the pencil. Given his natural instincts to bite hard this took much control and positive reinforcement for him to understand to “hold the pencil gently.”
Retrieve Blue Bone- Because Mals are so intelligent, it was easy for him to discern colors as shown. He recognizes the difference between the colors orange and blue. The bones are the shape and size are exactly alike. Both colors of bones where available for him to choose. Retrieving the blue bone shows his high degree of intelligence. His drive to please his owner is off the charts and that makes him highly trainable. Not all dogs have this high drive to please their people. Figuring out what motivates your dog and makes the exercise fun is the key to communicating well with them to master a behavior.
Water Bottle- first I taught him to identify the object with the word. Then I applied the “bring to me command.” Next, I shorted it in a conversation style and he could identify that it was same command. Not all dogs can do this! He is super smart.
When I train dogs, I break it down to the simplest behavior and work my way up to a more complected behavior using a balanced approach. I used completely positive techniques in this video. Tons of praise and rewards for the correct behavior. The timing of praise and reward is extremely important.
